Candidate Guide
Everything you need to take a Coco HR assessment with confidence.
You've been invited to complete an online assessment. This guide explains what you'll need, what's recorded and why, and exactly what to expect at each step. Take a breath — it's straightforward, and this page covers the details so there are no surprises.
What you'll need
- A modern desktop web browser (recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari on a laptop or desktop). A phone or tablet is not suitable.
- A working camera and microphone.
- The ability to share your screen when asked.
- A stable internet connection.
- A quiet, private space where you won't be interrupted.
The two kinds of links
You may receive one of two links:
- An apply link (
/apply/{jobId}) — to submit your application: upload your resume and enter your name, email, and phone. After you submit, you'll see "Application Submitted." - An assessment link (
/assessment/{id}) — to take the actual assessment. This guide is about the assessment.
What's recorded, and why
During the assessment, Coco HR records for fairness and integrity:
- A webcam snapshot roughly every 45 seconds.
- Continuous webcam video and a screen recording, uploaded as you go.
It also notes certain actions so a human reviewer can see them, including tab-switching, leaving fullscreen, copy-paste attempts, and your cursor leaving the window. Copy and paste are blocked during the assessment.
This information is reviewed by people at the hiring company. Coco HR does not do automated face recognition, and there's no blocking of right-click or keyboard shortcuts. The recordings simply give the reviewer context.
Step by step
1. Start screen
Confirm your name and email. You can turn on an accessibility accommodation option here if you need it (see below). You must check the consent box — it covers recording of your screen, camera, and audio, and the flagging of actions like tab-switching and leaving fullscreen. You can't begin without consenting.
2. Device check
Coco HR checks that four things are ready — all are required to start:
- Camera
- Microphone
- Screen share (allow it when your browser prompts)
- Fullscreen
If any check fails, see Troubleshooting below.
3. The questions
Once you start, the assessment runs in fullscreen with:
- A total countdown for the whole assessment and a per-question timer.
- Questions shown one at a time. Navigation is forward-only — you can't go back to a previous question.
- Optional spoken question audio that may play automatically (if the assessment uses text-to-speech).
Depending on the assessment, you'll answer in one of these ways:
| Answer type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Subjective (typing) | Type your answer in the text box. Copy-paste is disabled. |
| Voice dictation | Instead of typing, select Dictate with voice to speak your answer (speech-to-text). |
| Multiple choice (MCQ) | Choose one of four options. |
| Coding | Write code in the in-browser editor. Some questions include a starter template. |
Some assessments begin with a short practice round so you can get comfortable before the scored questions.
4. Time's up and submitting
When the total time runs out, a time-up modal appears and your assessment is submitted automatically. You'll see a submitting screen, then a completed confirmation.
5. Feedback (optional)
You may be offered a short feedback survey. It's optional — share your thoughts or simply close the window.
Timers and navigation
- Keep an eye on both timers. The per-question timer keeps you moving; the total countdown ends the assessment.
- You cannot return to earlier questions, so give each one your best answer before moving on.
- Only the total time running out submits automatically. Warnings about tab-switching or fullscreen don't end your assessment — they're just noted.
If you exit fullscreen or switch tabs
If you leave fullscreen or switch tabs, you'll see a reminder asking you to return, and the action is noted on your record. These prompts are advisory — they warn you and keep a count, but they don't fail or end your assessment. The best approach is simply to stay in the assessment window until you're done.
Accessibility accommodation
On the start screen you can indicate that you require an accessibility accommodation. Turn this on if you need it — it flags your assessment so reviewers are aware.
Troubleshooting
Camera or microphone not detected
- Allow camera and microphone access when your browser prompts. If you dismissed the prompt, open your browser's site permissions, enable them for the assessment site, and reload.
Screen sharing was denied
- When prompted to share your screen, choose to share and confirm. If you declined, reload the page and allow it when asked again.
Can't enter fullscreen
- Select the option to enter fullscreen and start. If your browser blocked it, reload and try again, and avoid pressing Escape during the assessment.
Something else went wrong
- Check your internet connection and reload the assessment link. If the problem continues, contact the person who invited you, or email support@cocolevio.com.
Tips for a smooth assessment
- Close other apps and browser tabs before you start.
- Sit in a well-lit, quiet room.
- Have a stable connection (wired or strong Wi-Fi).
- Read each question fully — you can't come back to it.
Good luck.
